ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Minor planet

A minor planet is a really big rock that floats around in space. Some people call them asteroids or planetoids, but they're all the same thing. They're not quite as big as real planets, but they're still important because they can help us learn more about the history of our solar system.

So, imagine you're playing with some toy blocks. You have some big blocks that are like the planets, and some smaller blocks that you're just moving around. The big blocks stay in place, but the smaller ones can move around and bump into each other.

That's kind of what happens in space. The minor planets are like the smaller blocks - they move around and sometimes bump into other objects in space. They can be different sizes and shapes, and some of them even have their own moons!

Scientists can learn a lot about the minor planets by studying them with telescopes and sending spacecraft to get a closer look. We can learn about what they're made of, where they came from, and how they've changed over time.

So, even though they're not as important as the big planets like Earth and Jupiter, minor planets are still pretty cool and worth studying!
