Moated settlements

A moated settlement is type of settlement that is protected by a large ditch filled with water called a moat. It is a kind of fort, or castle, that is built to protect the people who live inside from any kind of attack. The moat is usually very wide and deep, so it would be very difficult for anybody to get in or out. It also makes it much harder for attackers to fight their way in, because they have to swim or cross a bridge over the water. Some moated settlements also have high walls around them, to make it even harder for attackers to get in.
