ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Modular Airborne FireFighting System

Do you know what firefighters do? They help put out fires when there's an emergency. Sometimes, fires can be very big and dangerous, and regular hoses and water tanks may not be enough to put them out. That's where the Modular Airborne Firefighting System, or MAFFS, comes in!

Think of the MAFFS like a big, powerful water gun that can carry a lot of water way up high in the sky. It's actually a system that can fit onto certain planes that are used by the Air Force and National Guard. These planes are called C-130 Hercules planes, and they're really big and strong.

When there's a big fire that needs to be put out, the MAFFS is loaded onto the C-130 plane. It's like attaching a special tool to Superman's utility belt - it makes the plane even more powerful and ready to help.

The MAFFS can carry up to 3,000 gallons of water or even a special gel that helps put out fires. When the plane flies over the fire, it releases the water or gel from the MAFFS onto the flames below. It's like a big shower of water or gel falling from above!

This helps put out the fire faster and more effectively. The MAFFS and the C-130 plane it's attached to can fly back and forth between a nearby water source and the fire location, dropping more water or gel each time.

So, even though fires can be very scary and dangerous, there are special tools like the MAFFS and brave people like firefighters who are ready to help keep us safe.
