ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Molecular term symbol

Molecular term symbols are symbols used to show the amount of energy of different kinds of molecules. A molecule is made up of a bunch of atoms stuck together, and each atom has a certain amount of energy. When atoms stick together, their energies can either add up, subtract from each other, or stay the same. Molecular term symbols tell us how the energy of the atoms combines when the molecules are formed. By looking at the symbol we can tell how much energy the molecule has. For example, if a molecule has two H atoms (H2) and the term symbol is Δ, this means the energy of the molecule is lower than the energy of 2 H atoms by themselves.
