ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Monarchy of Spain

Alright kiddo, have you ever heard of a kingdom? It's when a country is ruled by a king or queen. Spain is one of those countries and it has a king too! His name is King Felipe VI and he is the leader of the country.

Now, King Felipe VI's role is a bit different from regular people like you and me. He doesn't have to go to school, work or pay bills like us. Instead, his job is to represent the country and make important decisions along with the government.

The Monarchy of Spain has a long history. Spain was ruled by different monarchs over the years, from the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, to King Juan Carlos I who reigned for almost 40 years before stepping down and making way for King Felipe VI.

King Felipe VI has a family too! His wife is Queen Letizia and they have two daughters. Their names are Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia. They also have a palace where they live called the Palacio Real de Madrid.

Even though the King of Spain is a very important person, he doesn't have all the power in the country. Spain has a government and a prime minister who make decisions too. The king's role is more like a representative and a symbol of the country.

So that's it, kiddo! Spain has a king who represents and leads the country, but he doesn't have all the power.
