ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Monster Study

The monster study was a scientific study that took place a long time ago. In this study, scientists wanted to learn how children learn to talk. They gathered a group of kids and divided them into two groups. One group was told they spoke really well and the other group was told they had problems with how they spoke.

Scientists wanted to see if telling the kids they had speech problems would make them feel bad and maybe even make it harder for them to learn to talk. They recorded the kids as they talked and listened to them over time.

Later, many people found out about the study and they were not happy. They thought it was wrong for scientists to tell kids they had speech problems when they didn't. They also thought that telling kids they had a problem with how they spoke was mean and cruel.

So even though the study was done a long time ago, people still talk about it today, because it teaches us an important lesson about being kind to others, especially kids.
