ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Morpheme

Morphemes are like little building blocks that make up words.

Think of it like playing with Legos. You have different colored blocks that you can snap together to make different shapes and sizes.

In the same way, words are made up of morphemes – little pieces that you can combine together to make different meanings.

For example, the word "unhappy" has two morphemes – "un" and "happy". "Un" means the opposite of, so when you put it together with "happy", it makes a new word with a different meaning.

Understanding morphemes is important because it can help you read and write better. By knowing the meaning of certain morphemes, you can figure out what unfamiliar words might mean.

So, just like with Legos, you can use different morphemes to build new words and create meaning!
