Mothing

Moths are insects that go through a process called metamorphosis, where they start as eggs, then become caterpillars, then turn into a chrysalis, and finally become moths. Moths come in many different shapes, sizes, and colors, but they are usually nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. People can be interested in moths and study them by a process called "mothing." This means putting up a light at night to attract moths and then observing and identifying them. Mothing can be done with a special light called a "black light," which attracts more moths than a regular light, or with a simple sheet or cloth that is hung up and then illuminated. Moths are attracted to the light because they think it is the moon, which they use to navigate. Mothing is a fun and easy way to learn about different types of moths and the environment they live in.
