Motor neuron disease, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a very bad sickness that can make your muscles stop working.
Your muscles are like rubber bands that help you move your arms and legs, and even breathe and swallow. Your brain tells your muscles what to do through special wires called neurons. But when you have motor neuron disease, those neurons stop working and your muscles can't move like they should.
It's like trying to play with a toy that's broken, no matter how hard you push or pull, it just doesn't work anymore.
This can make it hard to do everyday things like walking, talking, and even eating. Some people with motor neuron disease might need special equipment like wheelchairs or breathing machines to help them move and breathe.
Unfortunately, there's no cure for motor neuron disease yet, but doctors and scientists are working hard to find one. In the meantime, they can give medicine and therapy to help people stay as healthy and comfortable as possible.
