ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Motorman (locomotive)

A motorman is like a big conductor who drives a special train called a locomotive. The locomotive is the machine that pulls all the other train cars behind it.

The motorman sits in a special seat at the front of the locomotive and is responsible for making it go forward or backward, and making it stop. Think of it like a really big remote control for a toy train!

To make the locomotive go, the motorman uses a special lever called the throttle. It's like pushing the gas pedal in a car, except the throttle controls how much power the locomotive uses to move forward.

The motorman also uses special brakes to slow down or stop the locomotive. There are different types of brakes, like air brakes and hand brakes, to make sure the train stops safely.

But being a motorman is more than just making the train move and stop. They have to pay attention to signals and signs along the tracks to make sure the train is going in the right direction and stopping at the right stations.

And just like how adults have to follow rules and laws when they drive a car, motormen have to follow special rules and laws when they drive a train to make sure everyone stays safe.
