ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Movie camera

Okay kiddo, so you know how when we take pictures with our phone or camera, we can see the picture right away? Well, a movie camera is kinda like that, but instead of taking one picture at a time, it takes lots and lots of pictures really quickly in a row.

These pictures are called frames, and when they are played back in order, they make a movie. It's like those flip books you like, where you see a picture on each page and when you flip through them, it looks like the pictures are moving.

But how does the movie camera take all those pictures so fast? Well, inside the camera there is something called film that looks like a long strip of plastic. When we turn on the camera and press the button to start recording, the film starts moving through the camera really fast.

As the film moves, there is a light that shines through a tiny hole in the camera called the lens. The light shines onto the film and makes a picture of whatever the camera is pointing at. The film moves so fast that it makes lots of pictures in a row, one after the other.

When we're done recording, we take the film out of the camera and send it to a special place to get it developed. That means they take the film and turn all the pictures into one big movie that we can watch on a screen.

And that's how a movie camera works, kiddo!
