ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mudslide

Imagine you are playing in your backyard and you build a mountain of dirt and sand. Then, you pour a bucket of water on it to make it wet and slippery. Now, imagine that instead of being in your backyard, the mountain you built is a big hill next to a river and it rains a lot. The water from the rain soaks into the ground and makes it very, very wet. Because the mountain is so big, it's very heavy and the wet ground can't hold it up anymore. So, the dirt and sand start to move down the hill, carrying everything in their path with them. This is what we call a mudslide!

Mudslides can be very dangerous because they can happen very quickly, and they can destroy everything in their path. They can happen in places where there are mountains or hills, and there is a lot of rain or snow. Sometimes, people build houses or towns in places where there is a risk of mudslides, and this is very dangerous. If a mudslide is coming, it is important to get to a safe place as quickly as possible.
