ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Musha-e

Musha-e is a special kind of Japanese painting that shows great warriors and battles. It's like a picture book, but instead of being a story, it's just one cool scene.

Imagine you and your friends playing make-believe games outside, pretending to be knights and pirates fighting each other. Now imagine that you have a really good artist friend who can draw what you are pretending to do. Musha-e is like this, but for real warriors and battles instead of play-pretend.

These paintings are really special because they are made with a special kind of ink and brush called sumi and fude. They use special techniques to make it look really cool. You might have seen some paintings with some parts that look super dark and some parts that are lighter. This is called shading, and it's something you can only do with sumi and fude.

Some of these paintings are so old that they are hundreds of years old! So musha-e is also a way to learn about what people in Japan used to think was cool a long, long time ago.
