Musique concrète is like playing with sounds like you play with toys. But instead of using regular musical instruments like pianos or guitars, you use just about any sound that you might hear in everyday life, like people talking, car engines, animal noises or even just the sound of footsteps.
But how do you make music out of all these sounds? You record them first, and then you use a special machine called a “tape recorder” to play them back, but you can change the speed, the pitch and the order of the sounds to make them sound different. You can even cut them up and rearrange them to create new sounds altogether!
So, just like you can use different color crayons to make a new drawing, in musique concrète, you use these different sounds like colors to make a completely different kind of music. It's not always easy to listen to, but it can be really exciting and unique.
