ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

NIOSH air filtration rating

Okay kiddo, so do you know what air filtration is? It's a way to clean the air we breathe. Sometimes the air can have bad things in it like dust or germs that can make us sick. So air filters help to remove those bad things from the air.

NIOSH is a group that tests air filters to see how well they work. They give the filters a rating based on how good they are at removing different types and sizes of particles from the air. The ratings are called N95, N99, and N100.

N95 means the filter is really good at removing 95% of the tiny particles in the air. N99 means it's even better and removes 99% of them. And N100 means it's the best and removes 100% of the particles.

So if you're ever in a situation where you need to wear a face mask to protect yourself from bad things in the air, you want to make sure it has a high NIOSH rating like N95, N99, or N100 so you know it will do a good job of keeping you safe.
