Namahage is a famous Japanese tradition that happens during the New Year festival. It involves people dressing up as a scary demon and visiting different houses to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck for the upcoming year.
Just like on Halloween, people wear scary costumes and masks during Namahage. They also carry a big wooden knife and a pot with them. But unlike Halloween, they're not out to scare people just for fun- they have a special mission!
When they visit someone's house, they knock on the door and shout loudly, "Are there any crybabies or naughty kids here?". The aim is to scare away any bad behavior or negative energy and encourage kids to be brave, strong and kind-hearted.
The children might be scared at first, but soon realize that Namahage is actually helpful in their growth and development. The demon will give them some life advice and wish them a happy new year before moving on to the next house.
If you live in Japan and want to invite Namahage to your home, you need to prepare some mochi (rice cakes) or sake (Japanese alcohol) as a gift. Then, just sit back and enjoy this unique and fascinating cultural experience!
