Naming of moons

Hey there kiddo!

So you know how Earth has a moon? Well, other planets have moons too! And just like people have names, scientists like to give names to these moons so they can talk about them easily.

But choosing a name isn’t just like picking a favorite color or a favorite sandwich. Scientists have to think really hard about what name they give each moon!

Sometimes, a moon is named after a character from a story or a myth. For example, Jupiter has a moon named Io, which is named after a character from Greek mythology. Sometimes, a moon is named after a famous astronomer or scientist who discovered it.

And sometimes, a moon just gets a simple name like “Moon #1”, “Moon #2”, and so on. This is usually because scientists haven’t come up with a name that fits the moon well enough yet.

So there you have it! Naming moons is just like giving people or pets a name, except it has to be special and fit the moon well.
