National Assembly of Quebec

Okay kiddo, let me tell you about the National Assembly of Quebec! It’s a special group of people who meet to make important decisions for the province of Quebec where we live.

To understand what the National Assembly of Quebec is, we first need to know a few things about Quebec. Quebec is one of Canada’s 13 provinces and it has its own government. This means that while Canada has a Prime Minister and a federal government, Quebec has a Premier and a provincial government. The National Assembly is part of that provincial government.

The people who make up the National Assembly are called Members of the National Assembly or MNAs for short. They are elected by the people of Quebec to represent them. The MNAs sit in a big room called the Assembly Chamber or “Hémicycle” in French. It’s kind of like a classroom, but instead of desks, there are seats for the MNAs to sit in.

When the MNAs meet, they talk about and vote on different laws and decisions that affect the people of Quebec. They might talk about things like healthcare, education, the environment, or even something like changing the Quebec flag! They work together to come up with solutions that they think will make Quebec a better place to live.

But how do they decide on these things? Well, first there is usually a debate, where MNAs take turns presenting their ideas and trying to convince others to agree with them. They might raise their hand to speak, and the Speaker of the National Assembly (who is like the teacher in a classroom) will call on them to talk.

Once everyone has had a chance to speak, they will vote on the decision. This is done using a system called “standing votes,” where the MNAs stand up if they agree with the decision, or stay seated if they don’t. The Speaker then counts how many people are standing and announces the result.

So you see, just like how you and your friends work together in school to make decisions, the MNAs in the National Assembly work together to make important decisions for the whole province of Quebec!
