ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

National Film Preservation Foundation

The National Film Preservation Foundation is a group of people who work to take care of really old movies and make sure that they don't disappear forever. Just like we need to take care of our toys and keep them in a safe place so we can play with them again later, the people at the National Film Preservation Foundation need to keep old movies safe so we can watch them in the future.

Sometimes, old movies can get lost, damaged, or even destroyed. This is sad because those movies are like a piece of history that we can never get back. But the people at the National Film Preservation Foundation work hard to find those lost movies and bring them back to life. They also work to make sure that the movies that we do have are kept in good condition so that they don't get ruined.

One of the ways they do this is by copying the movies onto special film or digital formats. They also have special machines that can fix broken or damaged film so that we can watch the movies as if they were brand new.

So, just like how you have a special toy box to keep your toys safe, the National Film Preservation Foundation has special places to keep old movies safe and in good condition for everyone to enjoy for years to come.
