National Portrait Gallery and Wikimedia Foundation copyright dispute

Okay kiddo, so remember when you drew a really cool picture of your friend and you showed it to everyone, but then someone tried to take credit for it? That's kind of what's happening with the National Portrait Gallery and the Wikimedia Foundation.

You know how there's a place called the National Portrait Gallery where they have a lot of really old and famous pictures of people? Well, the National Portrait Gallery says that they own the copyright to those pictures, which means they get to decide who can use them and how.

But the Wikimedia Foundation is a group of people who want to make sure everyone can see and learn about these pictures, so they put some of these pictures on a website called Wikipedia. The National Portrait Gallery wasn't too happy about this because they didn't give permission for the pictures to be used, and they think they should get paid if someone wants to use their pictures.

So they got into a little argument about it and now they're trying to figure out what to do. It's a little bit like when you and your friend can't agree on which game to play and you have to talk it out and find a solution that works for both of you. Hopefully, the National Portrait Gallery and the Wikimedia Foundation can find a solution so we can all keep learning about and enjoying these important pictures.
