National Research Council Time Signal

Okay kiddo, have you ever wondered how we can all agree on what time it is? Well, there are special clocks that are set up all around the world and they all talk to each other to make sure they are showing the same time. One of the most important ones in the United States is called the National Research Council Time Signal.

The National Research Council Time Signal is like a special phone call that happens every day. At exactly 12 pm Eastern Standard Time, a person from the National Research Council in Canada picks up the phone and calls their friend in Colorado. When their friend answers the phone, they start counting and at the exact time they get to the number 9, they say "start". This is when the special clocks all over the United States start ticking at the exact same time.

People all over the country use these clocks to help them know what time it is. Even your teacher might use one to make sure class starts at the right time! Pretty cool, huh?
