ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

National day of mourning

Okay kiddo, so a national day of mourning is like a really sad day where lots of people in a whole big country are feeling sad and remembering someone or something that made them sad. Usually, it happens when something really bad happens, like a whole bunch of people die or something really bad happens to a really important person.

On this day, things might be different than normal. For example, people might not go to work or school or everything might be quiet and still. People might also do things to show they are sad, like wearing black clothes or putting flowers or candles in a special place.

So basically, it's like a time when everyone comes together to remember and honor something that was really sad, and to support each other through the hard feelings.
