ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

National human rights institution

A national human rights institution (NHRI) is like a superhero team that protects the rights of people in a country. Just like how superheroes have different powers and abilities, NHRI works differently in different countries. Their main job is to make sure everyone in the country gets treated fairly and with respect.

NHRI's members are like the superheroes' team captain and team members. They are experts in human rights and work as a team to make sure that all people in the country enjoy their rights without discrimination of any kind. They also have an important job of keeping an eye on the government, the police, and other big groups to make sure they follow the country's laws and protect everyone's rights.

With their superpowers, NHRI's team members raise awareness about human rights issues and teach people about their rights. They also investigate when someone's rights are being violated and provide advice and support to those who need their help.

Finally, like superheroes, they have a secret base (an office) where they have meetings, review reports, and make plans on how to protect human rights in their country. So, just like superheroes fight to protect citizens, NHRI works hard to protect the human rights of everyone in the country it serves.
