Native American use of fire in ecosystems

Okay kiddo, do you know what fire is? It's like the flames you see when you light a candle! Now, did you know that Native Americans used fire to take care of nature a long, long time ago?

When they set controlled fires, they did it to help the plants and animals grow better. Some plants need fire to help their seeds grow! And when dead plants and leaves are burned, it provides nutrients for the soil.

The fires also helped the Native Americans hunt. When the animals had to move to a different area because of the fire, the hunters could follow them and catch them more easily.

But the Native Americans were very careful when using fire. They picked the right time of year, when it was safest, and didn't use too much fire at once. They made sure the fire didn't get too big and out of control.

So, just like how you take care of your toys and pets, the Native Americans used fire to take care of nature too!
