ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

Okay, so a long time ago, there was a man named Zechariah and he was married to a woman named Elizabeth. They were very good people, but they were very sad because they did not have any children.

One day, while Zechariah was in a temple praying, an angel named Gabriel appeared to him and told him that they were going to have a baby boy. This baby was going to be very special because he would bring a message from God to the people.

Zechariah was very surprised and didn't believe it could happen because he and Elizabeth were very old. So, Gabriel made him unable to speak until the baby was born, as a sign that the promise would be kept.

But guess what? Elizabeth did get pregnant and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. They named him John.

John grew up to become a very good person, always helping others and teaching them about God. He baptized people in the river and told them to repent and turn towards God.

So, every year, on June 24th, we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist. It's a day when we remember how God fulfilled his promise to Zechariah and Elizabeth and how John grew up to become a great messenger of God.
