Nature–culture divide

Well kiddo, some people used to think that everything in the world could be divided into two categories: things that are natural and things that are cultural.

Things that are natural are things that are found in nature, like trees, animals, rocks, and the weather. These things are not made by people.

Things that are cultural are things that are made by people, like buildings, roads, clothes, and things we use for art or music.

Some people believed that natural things were better than cultural things because they thought that natural things were pure and unspoiled while cultural things were artificial and not as good.

But other people disagreed with this idea because they thought that everything in the world is connected and that humans are a part of nature too, so cultural things are just as natural as trees and animals.

So, nowadays, many people think that the nature-culture divide (or the idea that there is a clear separation between natural and cultural things) is not a helpful way to understand the world because it’s too simplistic and ignores the complex relationships between humans and the environment.
