ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nava Vihara

Navavihara is a Pali word that means "new conduct" or "new way of life". It is a concept that is often used in Buddhist practice to describe the process of developing positive habits and behaviors in order to attain inner peace and enlightenment.

Imagine that you were learning to ride a bike for the first time. At first, you might be wobbly and unsure of yourself. But as you practice more and more, you start to develop new habits and skills that make it easier to ride smoothly and confidently.

Similarly, when we practice Buddhism, we are trying to develop new habits and behaviors that help us to live in a more peaceful and compassionate way. This might mean learning to meditate regularly or practicing acts of kindness towards others.

Over time, these new habits become ingrained in us and we start to feel more naturally peaceful and contented. This is the goal of Navavihara: to develop new habits and behaviors that lead us closer to enlightenment and freedom from suffering.
