ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

New Straitsville, Ohio

New Straitsville, Ohio is a small town where people live, work, and go to school. It's in a state called Ohio, which is in the United States. The town is named after the street that runs through the middle of it, called Straitsville Road.

New Straitsville used to be mostly known for coal mining. Coal is a type of rock that can be burned to make energy. A long time ago, people started digging into the ground to get the coal out. They would use special tools and machines to dig tunnels and extract the coal.

The coal was really important for making things like electricity, which powers our homes and helps us see in the dark. But mining coal was also very dangerous. Sometimes, rocks would fall on workers, or they might get sick from breathing in too much coal dust.

In New Straitsville, the people who worked in the coal mines decided to stand up for themselves and ask for better working conditions. They went on strike, which means they refused to work until their bosses agreed to their demands. This was a big deal, because at the time, strikes were not allowed by law.

The strike went on for a long time, and the people in New Straitsville didn't have enough money to buy things they needed like food and clothes. So they came up with a creative solution. They started making their own moonshine, which is a type of alcohol that is made in secret. They would sell it to people who wanted to buy it, and use the money to support themselves and their families during the strike.

Eventually, the strike ended and the workers got some of the things they wanted. But the legacy of the moonshine-making stayed in New Straitsville. Today, the town celebrates its history with a Moonshine Festival every year, where people can taste different types of moonshine, listen to music, and learn about the town's past.
