Nian

Nian is a scary monster from long ago in China. He was very big and scary, with a long horns on his head and sharp teeth in his mouth. He would come out of hiding on the last night of every year, and he would go to villages while people would be asleep.

The villagers were really scared of Nian and would hide inside their homes. But one day they discovered something interesting. Nian was afraid of loud noises, bright lights, and the color red.

So the villagers came up with a plan to scare Nian away by making loud noises with fireworks, hanging red scrolls on their doors, and lighting up bright lanterns. It worked! Nian was so scared that he ran away and never came back. And that's why every year during the Spring Festival in China, people still set off fireworks, hang red decorations, and light up lanterns to keep the scary monster away.
