ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Niche differentiation

Imagine you and your friends are playing a game of tag on a big playground. You notice that all of your friends are running in one direction, trying to tag each other. But you decide to go a different way, towards the swings.

That's kind of like what niche differentiation is. In the big playground of nature, different animals and plants have certain ways of getting what they need to survive. They have different strategies for finding food, shelter, and mates.

Sometimes, different animals or plants can live together in the same area, but they each have their own special "niche" or job. Just like how you went to the swings instead of playing tag, animals and plants specialize in different ways of getting what they need.

For example, imagine a pond with lots of different types of fish. Some fish might be really good at swimming close to the surface and catching insects. Others might be better at diving down to the bottom of the pond and eating algae. They all live in the same place, but they each have their own way of getting food.

Niche differentiation helps different species coexist in the same area without getting in each other's way. It's like they divide up the playground so that everyone can play their own game without bumping into each other.
