ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Niter

Niter is a fancy word for something that looks like sugar, but isn't sweet. It's actually a kind of salt that's made up of two different things: nitrate and potassium.

So imagine you have two different colored beads, one red and one blue. If you put them together, you'd have a mix of red and blue beads. That's kind of like what happens with niter: you have nitrate and potassium, and when they come together, they make niter.

Now, niter may not taste good like sugar, but it has some other really cool uses. For example, people used to use it to make things explode like fireworks, or to add flavor to meat. Some people even used it as medicine!

But even though niter can be useful, it's important to remember that too much of it can be dangerous. So just like how you can't eat too much candy or else you'll get a tummy ache, you need to be careful with niter too. Always ask a grown-up if it's okay to use or consume niter.
