Nodule (geology)

Okay kiddo, a nodule is a small rock or mineral that is found underground. Imagine you're digging in the dirt and you come across a little round rock that feels different than the rest of the dirt. That could be a nodule!

Nodules are formed when minerals or rocks get trapped inside mud or sediment at the bottom of the ocean or a lake. Over time, the mud hardens and turns into rock, but the mineral or rock inside stays the same. So even though the nodule is small, it can be really old - sometimes thousands or even millions of years old!

People studying geology like to look at nodules because they can tell us more about what the earth was like a long time ago. They can also be valuable if they contain precious metals or other materials that we use for things like electronics, jewelry, or even medicine.
