ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Non-denominated postage

Alright kiddo, have you ever seen a postage stamp before? It's a little piece of paper that you put on an envelope to mail it. Well, sometimes there are special stamps that don't have a number on them that tells you how much they are worth. These are called non-denominated stamps.

The reason for this is that sometimes the cost of mailing a letter changes, and if there were only stamps with a specific number on them, people would have to go out and buy new stamps every time the cost of postage went up or down. That would be pretty inconvenient, wouldn't it?

So instead, they make these non-denominated stamps that can be used no matter how much it costs to mail a letter. The post office figures out how much they're worth based on the current cost of postage, and you don't have to worry about it. It's like having a magic stamp that can be used no matter what!

Nowadays, a lot of non-denominated stamps have pictures on them that are related to the theme of the stamp, like a picture of a famous person or a holiday scene. It makes them more interesting to collect and use!
