ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Normalhöhennull

Normalhöhennull (NHN) is a special way of measuring heights and depths. Imagine you have a toy house with a ladder inside. You climb up the ladder and you are now higher than the ground. The same thing happens when you climb a mountain, you are higher than the surrounding areas.

But, scientists and engineers want to measure the exact height of things relative to each other. So, they created a special measurement system called NHN. It is like a game where we want to find out who is taller or shorter than who.

To figure this out, scientists created imaginary lines called "sea level". It's like a line that runs all around the Earth, marking the height of water if there was an ocean at that point. If you are above this imaginary line, you are higher than sea level. If you are below it, you are lower than sea level.

Now, they needed a starting point. So, they chose a city in Germany called Amsterdam, because it's near the North Sea and the land is not too high or too low. They marked a point on a building in Amsterdam as the starting point of NHN. From there, they measured the height of other points around the world.

So, when we say something is 100 meters NHN, it means that it is 100 meters above the imaginary sea level line that starts in Amsterdam. This helps scientists and engineers to know the exact height of things and compare them to other places around the world.
