ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Norwegian continental shelf

Let's pretend we're playing with a big lego set, and we're building a really, really big castle! The castle is going to sit on top of a platform (like a big table) that floats in the water. That platform is called the continental shelf.

Now, the Norwegian continental shelf is a special floating table that sits in the water near Norway. It's special because it has lots of really valuable things buried underneath it, like oil and gas.

People have been digging down through the continental shelf to get to that oil and gas for a long time. They use big drilling machines to drill down into the lego blocks and suck out all the oil and gas they can find.

And you know what's really cool? All that oil and gas we find on Norway's continental shelf is really important for making things like gasoline to run cars and trucks, heating our homes, and making electricity! So, even though it seems like a big lego set, it's really important for grown-up things too.
