ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nozzle extension

Imagine you have a toy water gun that shoots water out of its nozzle. Now pretend that you want the water to go further than it does with just the normal nozzle. So, you take a plastic tube that's the same size as the nozzle and attach it to the end of the water gun. This tube is called a nozzle extension. When you use the water gun now, the water travels further because it has more space to move before it comes out of the toy.

The same concept applies to bigger machines like airplanes and rockets that use engines to move. A nozzle extension is a part that is added to the engine's nozzle to make the exhaust gases move faster and more efficiently. This can make the machine go faster or use less fuel, which is good because it saves money and resources.

Just like how your water gun needed a tube that was the right size, nozzle extensions also need to be the right size and shape to work properly on different types of engines. Scientists and engineers spend a lot of time designing and testing different nozzle extensions to find the best one for each unique situation.
