ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nulla poena sine culpa

Okay kiddo, have you ever done something wrong and been punished for it? Of course you have, because sometimes we all make mistakes. But did you ever get in trouble for something you didn't do? That wouldn't be very fair, would it?

In the grown-up world, there's a Latin phrase that means "No punishment without guilt." It's called "nulla poena sine culpa." What that means is that you can only get in trouble if you actually did something wrong. You can't be punished for something you didn't do.

This idea is really important because it helps keep the justice system fair. If people were punished for things they didn't do, then innocent people could get hurt. So, we say "nulla poena sine culpa" to make sure that only guilty people get punished, and that everyone else can live without fear of being wrongly accused.
