Nutmeg is a kind of spice that comes from a nutmeg tree. Just like how we can get apples from an apple tree, we can get nutmeg from a nutmeg tree. The nutmeg tree grows in hot and sunny places like Indonesia, and it can grow up to 65 feet tall!
After the nutmeg fruit is picked from the tree, the outside skin is removed to reveal a hard, brown nutmeg seed. This is what we use for cooking and baking. You can use a grater or a small handheld tool called a nutmeg grater to shave off tiny pieces of the nutmeg seed.
Nutmeg has a warm and spicy taste and is often used in things like pumpkin pie, apple cider, and even some types of meat dishes. But be careful! While nutmeg is safe to eat when used in small amounts, eating too much of it can make you feel sick and dizzy. So always use nutmeg in moderation!
