Nutrient film technique

Nutrient film technique (NFT) is a way of growing plants without soil. A nutrient solution is pumped into channels made out of plastic. The solution flows in a very thin film along the bottom of the channel, providing the plant roots with water and food. The plants are held in place in the channels by plastic mesh or foam. This way the plants get all the nutrients they need without the need for soil.
