Oath of office of the president of the United States

When someone becomes the President of the United States, they have to promise to do a really important job. It's like when you promise to clean your room or behave in class. The promise that the President makes is called the "oath of office".

In the oath of office, the President promises to do three main things:

1. Protect the Constitution - This means that the President has to make sure that everyone follows the rules that are written in the Constitution. The Constitution is like a big rulebook that says how our country should be run.

2. Execute the laws - This means that the President has to make sure that all of the laws that are passed by Congress are being followed. Congress is a group of people who make laws for our country.

3. Preserve, protect, and defend the United States - This means that the President has to keep our country safe and make sure that we are doing what we can to make things better for everyone who lives here.

When the President takes the oath of office, they put their hand on a special book called a Bible (or another book that is important to them). Then, they say the words of the oath that were written by the people who made the Constitution. This is a really big moment for our country because it means that the President is officially in charge and ready to do their job.
