ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Office of Commercial Space Transportation

The Office of Commercial Space Transportation (FAA-AST) is a part of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Its job is to make sure that all the space things going up into the sky are safe for people and other things that might be around.

Just like how we have rules for cars on the road, there are rules for things that go up into the sky. The FAA-AST makes sure that all the people and companies building and launching space things follow these rules.

The FAA-AST works with other government departments, like NASA and the Department of Defense, to make sure everyone is working together and following the rules.

Because space things can be very dangerous, the FAA-AST also has special people who watch over the flights to make sure everything is going well. They make sure everything is safe before the space things go up into the sky.

Overall, the Office of Commercial Space Transportation is like the safety guard for everything going up into space. They make sure everything is safe and working as it should be.
