Official Opposition (New Zealand)

In New Zealand, when people vote in an election, they choose who they want to represent them in the government. The group that gets the most votes becomes the ruling party and gets to make decisions about how the country is run.

However, there are other groups who also get elected but didn't get as many votes as the ruling party. These groups are called "opposition parties" because they disagree with some of the decisions that the ruling party makes.

The leader of the biggest opposition party in New Zealand becomes the "official opposition". This means that their job is to make sure the ruling party is doing a good job and to point out anything they don't agree with.

The official opposition also has some special privileges in parliament, like being able to ask the Prime Minister questions and having their own space to sit in parliament. Essentially, they're a sort of "watchdog" to make sure things are going well and to voice alternative opinions.
