ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Oldowan

Okay kiddo, so a long, long time ago, before there were stores or even houses, there were these creatures called hominids. They were kind of like humans, but not exactly. They needed tools to survive and do things like get food and make shelter.

One of the first tools that hominids used was called the Oldowan tool. It's named after a place in Tanzania where archaeologists found the oldest ones.

The Oldowan tool is really simple. It's just a rock that's been chipped into a sharp edge. It's not like the tools we use today that are made in factories with machines. The hominids made them by hitting one rock against another until they got the shape they wanted.

They used the Oldowan tool for lots of things. They could use it to cut meat or plants, or to dig holes in the ground. The sharp edge could also be used as a weapon to protect themselves from animals.

The cool thing about the Oldowan tool is that it shows that hominids were starting to think creatively and problem solve. They figured out that they could chip rocks into useful shapes, and that opened up a whole new world of possibilities for them.

So while it might look like just a simple rock to us, the Oldowan tool was a really important invention that helped our ancestors survive and thrive!
