ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Olefin

Imagine that you are playing with a set of blocks. Each block is made up of little units called atoms. Some of these atoms are really good at sharing their electrons with other atoms in order to form a strong bond. In fact, they are so good at this that they can join together to make long chains! These chains are called polymers, and they can be found all around us in things like plastic bags and water bottles.

Olefin is a special type of polymer made up of two kinds of atoms: carbon and hydrogen. These two atoms love to bond together because they have a kind of sticky force that makes them attract each other. When they bond together in long chains, they form a strong and flexible plastic. This plastic is amazing because it can stretch without breaking, and it is water-resistant, which means that it won't soak up water like a sponge.

Olefin is used to make all sorts of things that we use every day. For example, it can be used to make carpeting, upholstery, and even clothing. It is also used in packaging materials like shrink wrap and food containers. So, the next time you are playing with blocks, remember that some atoms are really good at sticking together to make strong and useful things like olefin!
