ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Oleochemical

Oleochemicals are made from natural fats and oils, just like the ones we eat for breakfast, like butter, margarine, and vegetable oil. However, oleochemicals are not used for food.

Instead, they are used in many different products, from soap and detergent to candles and cosmetics. How does that work? Well, when oils and fats are chemically processed, they can be turned into new compounds, just like when we mix paint to make different colors. These new compounds are called oleochemicals, and they have many different properties - some are sticky, some are slippery, and some are gooey.

Companies use these compounds to create new products or to enhance the properties of existing ones. So next time you use soap, remember that it might contain oleochemicals made from the same kind of oil in your kitchen!
