ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Olmstead v. L.C.

Okay, so one day some people decided that it wasn't fair that people with disabilities weren't being treated the same as other people in their community. They thought that these people should have the same chance to be a part of their community and have friends, jobs, and fun things to do just like everyone else.

So they went to court to tell the judges why it was important for these people with disabilities to be treated the same as everyone else. They made an argument that it is not okay to keep people locked up in places just because they have a disability.

And the judges agreed! They made a decision that said people with disabilities have the right to make choices for themselves and be part of their communities. This decision is called Olmstead v. L.C. and it helps protect the rights and freedoms of people with disabilities.
