ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

One Song to the Tune of Another

Okay kiddo, imagine you have a favorite toy car with different parts like wheels, doors, and a roof. Now, imagine there is a friend who has the exact same car but with different colors and parts.

In music, a song is like a toy car with different parts like melody (which is the tune you hear), lyrics (which are the words), rhythm (which is the beat you feel), and harmony (which are the different notes that make the song sound good together).

When someone makes a new version of a song using the same melody but different lyrics, we call it a “cover” or “remix”. It’s like taking your toy car and putting on different stickers and paint to make it look like your friend’s car.

But when someone makes a new version of a song with different melody, using the same lyrics and rhythm, we call it a “parody” or “mashup”. It’s like taking the different parts of your toy car and putting it together with your friend’s car parts to make a unique car that has a little bit of both cars in it.

So, when you hear a song to the tune of another, it’s like hearing someone use the same melody of one song to sing different words from another song. It can be funny and creative, just like playing with your toy cars and making different combinations.
