ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Open court principle

Okay, so you know how when you play hide and seek, you have to find where your friends are hiding? Well, sometimes, grown-ups have to find out things too, but they can't always do it by themselves. They need to ask lots of different people lots of different questions to help them figure things out.

But, sometimes, grown-ups need to keep some things a secret, like your surprise birthday party. They might not want you to know because it's a surprise, and they want to keep it a secret until the special day.

For grown-ups who need to find things out, but don't need to keep it a secret, there is something called the open court principle. This is when the grown-ups who are trying to find things out can go to a place called a court and ask the judge questions about what is happening in the case. And, just like when you play hide and seek, the grown-ups who are being asked the questions have to be honest and tell the truth.

The open court principle is really important because it allows people to know what is happening in court cases and to make sure that everyone is being fair and following the rules. This helps to keep things fair and equal for everyone, just like when you play games with your friends and everyone has to follow the same rules.
