Operation Backfire (WWII)

During World War II, there were a group of people who were trying to secretly work against the bad guys (the Axis Powers) and help the good guys (the Allies). But sometimes, the bad guys found out about these secret people and what they were doing.

In Operation Backfire, the bad guys (specifically, the Germans) found out about a group of secret people who were making something called "delay-action bombs." These bombs were meant to explode after a certain amount of time had passed, which would make them tougher for the bad guys to find and defuse.

Instead of letting the secret people keep making these bombs and using them against the bad guys, the Germans decided to try and trick them. They got some of their own people to pretend to be helpful, and told the secret people that they needed more of the special materials to make the bombs work. So, the secret people sent a shipment of the materials to the fake helpful people.

But, the Germans had secretly made some changes to the materials, so that when the secret people made the bombs and set them to explode later, they wouldn't actually work. This was a bad thing for the secret people, because they were counting on the bombs to work well and help the good guys.

So, Operation Backfire was a plan by the Germans to trick the secret people and stop them from making these bombs. It worked, unfortunately for the good guys.
