Operation Nickel Grass

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of something called a war? Well, a long time ago, in the 1970s, there was a war going on between two countries: Israel and Egypt. This war was called the Yom Kippur War. It was a big and scary war, and lots of people were getting hurt and many were dying.

Now, during the war, the United States decided to help Israel by sending them lots and lots of important things they needed to keep fighting, like tanks, bullets, and food. But there was a problem - getting these things to Israel wasn't going to be easy. You see, Israel was very far away from the US, and there were other countries that didn't want the US to help Israel in the war. These countries might try to stop the US from sending things to Israel.

So, the US came up with a plan to get what Israel needed to them safely. They decided to use planes to drop supplies into Israel, because it was safer than sending ships, which might be sunk by enemy countries. The US gave this plan a code name, and they called it "Operation Nickel Grass".

Lots and lots of planes flew from the US to Israel, carrying things like weapons, medical supplies, and fuel. The planes were flying over 6,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, and then had to go over other countries to get to Israel. But the US was very careful, and the planes flew at night to avoid being seen by other countries.

Thanks to Operation Nickel Grass, Israel was able to get the important things they needed to keep fighting in the war. The war lasted for a few more weeks, but with the help of the US's supplies, Israel was able to win. And that's why Operation Nickel Grass was so important - because it helped Israel during a really tough time.
